Linear Hinge & Roller Replacement: The Highland Park Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Linear-compatible gate hinges and rollers for most swing and slide gate models, and in Highland Park the typical installed price runs $180 to $460 depending on the gate’s weight, the roller size, and whether the hinge post itself needs attention. Most hinge and roller swaps happen the same day we look at it, because we keep the common sizes on the truck. What usually tips a homeowner off is a gate that suddenly drags on the driveway side, or a swing gate that leans a little harder toward the latch each week until the latch quits lining up at all.

Linear built a lot of the slide gates around Dallas, and their roller trucks and hinge brackets from the early 2000s are hitting the end of their run right about now. We have been replacing them since Hal Gatewood started this shop in 2001, so we know which rollers fit which rail profile and which aftermarket hinges will outlast the originals instead of failing in two summers.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Most Linear slide gates use either a steel V-track roller or a cantilever roller setup, depending on the series. The older Linear SL and VS slide operators paired with gates that have 2-inch or 3-inch roller trucks, and the hinge brackets on swing models share the same bolt pattern through most of the LS and AP series. If you can find the model plate on the operator or the gate frame itself, we can match it. If the plate is gone, we measure the roller diameter, track width, and hinge pin size right at the driveway and go from there.

One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Linear’s 2-inch roller trucks are not interchangeable with the 3-inch trucks, even though both fit onto a standard square post. The track height changes, the gate rides an inch lower, and the limit switches in the operator will fight you every time. We carry OEM Linear parts when the customer wants factory match, and quality aftermarket equivalents from the same U.S. suppliers the commercial gate companies use around Dallas. We tell you which one you’re getting and what the honest price difference is, then you decide.

Signs Your Linear Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing

  • The gate’s dragging or gouging the driveway. A roller bearing seizes, the wheel stops turning, and now the gate is grinding flat spots into the wheel and chewing a groove into the concrete. You’ll hear it before you see it.
  • The gate leans toward one side at rest. A hinge pin or roller bracket has worn enough that the panel sits an inch or two lower on one end. The operator is now fighting gravity every cycle, which shortens its life too.
  • Loud popping or grinding when the gate moves. Dried out or collapsed bearings in the roller truck make a screech, and a hinge with a wallowed-out pin hole pops every time the wind pushes the gate. These are not sounds that fix themselves.
  • The gate stops mid-cycle and reverses. When resistance from a bad roller exceeds the operator’s force settings, Linear operators are programmed to stop and reverse rather than burn the motor. The part that’s failing is usually not the operator.
  • Visible rust staining at the hinge or roller base. Texas humidity plus sitting water from sprinkler overspray eats cheap zinc plating fast. Once the rust line runs down the post, the bearings inside aren’t far behind.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a typical Highland Park slide gate, replacing both roller trucks with quality aftermarket units runs $190 to $320 installed. Swing gate hinge replacement runs $180 to $280 for both hinges, and if the hinge post has rotted or shifted, adding a new post or reinforcing the existing one brings the total into the $380 to $460 range. OEM Linear-branded parts add $40 to $90 over the aftermarket figure, and we’ll show you both numbers before we touch anything.

The price we quote is the price on the invoice, agreed before the first wrench turns. That includes the parts, the labor, grease and hardware, and a written 90-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right, we make it right. That’s been the rule since 2001 and it isn’t changing.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things before anyone comes out: see whether the gate wiggles side-to-side when it’s stationary, look for rust lines at the base of the hinge or roller, and note whether the gate only drags in one spot or the whole way. Those details save us a trip’s worth of guessing.

Where DIY goes wrong on this job is the swap itself. A slide gate that weighs 400 pounds will come down on you faster than you can react, and the hinge side of a swing gate is under load the whole time. We can replace rollers and hinges with the gate in place, but the person doing it needs to know how to brace the panel, support the load, and not discover halfway through that the post was the real problem. If the gate’s already leaning, that day is here. We’ll bring the torch, the welder, and the right parts on the truck. Call (325) 936-1371 and we will come take a look.
