• The gate sags toward the latch side. This is almost always a hinge problem, not a gate-panel problem. A hinge pin wears, the post bracket loosens, and the whole gate leans. Fix the post-side bracket first or you’ll do the same hinge job again next year.
• The gate scrapes or catches on the driveway. For slide gates, a flat-spotted roller drags instead of rolls. The noise is the flat spot hitting the v-track on every pass. For swing gates, the bottom hinge has dropped and the gate edge is now kissing concrete.
• The opener runs but the gate hesitates or shudders. A seized bearing in a roller makes the opener work against friction it wasn’t built for. That extra load shortens the motor life. The roller fails first, the opener follows.
• You hear a dry grinding or a metal-on-metal squeal. That’s a bearing that’s run out of grease and is now chewing itself up. Sealed bearings don’t get serviced. They get replaced. Once they’re loud, they’re done.
• Visible wobble when the gate is half open. Grab the gate and push sideways. If it moves more than a quarter inch, a hinge pin or roller bearing has play in it. A little play becomes a lot of play faster than most people expect.
