Linear Welding & Fabrication: The Highland Park Owner’s Guide
If you’ve got a Linear gate operator with a cracked bracket, a sheared weld on the arm mount, or a gate frame that’s pulling apart at the hinge, we stock the fabricated components to fix it right in Highland Park. Typical installed pricing for Linear-specific welding and fabrication runs $225-$475 depending on whether we’re rebuilding a mount, reinforcing a gate frame, or re-welding a post bracket. Most jobs are done the same day, right in your driveway, without hauling your gate off to a shop. You’ll usually know it’s coming because the gate starts shuddering halfway through its travel, or you’ll spot a rust line bleeding through paint where a weld is failing underneath.
What most folks don’t realize until it happens: Linear operators put real force through their mounting points, and when a weld lets go on a bracket or hinge plate, the operator keeps right on pushing. That’s when a $250 weld job turns into a bent arm or a stripped gearbox. The good news is Hal Gatewood has been cutting and re-welding these exact failures in and around Highland Park since 2001, so we’ve seen which Linear parts fail first and why.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
We work on the full Linear swing and slide operator lineup, including the LRA actuator series, the LDCO series, and the older LS and LA linears that are still running in a lot of Highland Park estate gates. Linear’s design relies on a steel actuator arm or chain drive that mounts to fabricated steel brackets, and those brackets are notorious for taking more stress than the rest of the gate. The slide gates in particular put a constant push-pull on the chain tabs and end stops, and over a decade or two, the metal fatigues.
When we match a part, what matters isn’t just the model number on the motor housing. We measure the bracket’s bolt pattern, the actuator arm’s throw length, and the gate’s total weight and leaf width. Linear built several generations of arms that look nearly identical on a parts diagram but have different clevis pin diameters and different travel distances. The fastest way to ID what we’re dealing with is to send us a photo of the failed part and the nameplate on the operator. We’ll tell you before we even come out whether it’s an OEM Linear part we can source or a fabricated equivalent that’ll outlast the original.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Linear’s factory brackets are stamped and powder-coated, and in the Texas climate they rust from the inside at the bolt holes. For most Highland Park installs, we cut a new bracket from heavier-gauge steel and weld it in place rather than bolting in another stamped piece that’s going to fail the same way in six years. The OEM part is easier, but the fabricated part is usually the better repair.
Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate shudders or jerks mid-travel. This is almost always play in a bracket or a tired weld. The motor’s compensating for slack in the mount, and every cycle is making it worse.
- A rust line or crack has appeared along the welds. Hairline cracks let moisture get under the paint, and that rust stain is the tell. By the time it’s visible, the weld is usually 80% compromised.
- The gate hangs visibly low at the free end. The hinge post weld isn’t holding. The gate hasn’t bent; the joint is opening up, and the whole gate’s hanging off the operator.
- The operator arm binds or clicks at the clevis pin. The pin’s wallowed out the bracket hole from years of cycling. Force is no longer going through the weld, it’s going through a slot.
- You hear a metal-on-metal knock when the gate stops. That’s the actuator or gate leaf bottoming out against a mount that’s worked itself loose from a failed weld.
Any one of those symptoms is a repair that costs a fraction of what you’ll spend if the operator keeps running against a broken mount. We’ve replaced the same gearbox in Highland Park three times for a homeowner who ignored a creaking weld for a year.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Highland Park we quote branch-and-bound pricing for Linear welding and fabrication, not bedroom math. A simple bracket re-weld or rebuilt clevis tab runs $225-$275. Rebuilding a hinge post mount, where the gate has to be supported and realigned, usually runs $325-$400. A full gate frame reinforcement, where we plate and re-weld stress points along the leaf, runs $400-$475 per gate depending on length and what shape the existing steel’s in.
| Scope | Installed Price Range |
|---|---|
| Bracket or clevis tab re-weld | $225 - $275 |
| Hinge post mount rebuild & realignment | $325 - $400 |
| Full gate frame reinforcement (per leaf) | $400 - $475 |
That price includes the steel, the welding, and removing and reinstalling the operator so the arm aligns square. Nothing is extra at the door. You get the price in writing before we strike an arc, and it doesn’t change. The work carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise: if the weld fails, we’re back out and we make it right. No fine print, no arguing the definition of failure. Every repair over $200 also gets you $40 off, and if you’re a senior or veteran it’s 10% off the ticket permanently.
DIY or Call Us?
There are two things you can safely check yourself before you call. First, the operator arm’s clevis pin: if you can wiggle it with your hand, the bracket is wallowed. Second, the hinge post. Put a level against it. If the gate’s moving but the post is moving too, the post weld is gone.
What you shouldn’t do is re-weld a gate yourself unless you have a 220V welder, a proper helmet, and enough experience doing vertical re-tacks right. If the gate is under tension or the post is leaning, you can fix it dead straight and have it sag again in a week. Also, if your operator is still wired while you’re underneath it, you’re one bad limit switch away from a broken arm or worse. We work with the operator powered off. If you’re not sure, call. Tell me what it’s doing wrong and I’ll come take a look, here’s my cell.
FAQs
A properly welded bracket or hinge mount typically lasts 12-18 years in Highland Park before the Texas heat and humidity start attacking the weld line again. Factory Linear brackets tend to fail around the 8-10 year mark because they rust from the bolt holes inward. Our fabricated replacements start with heavier steel and get coated after the weld, so the weak points are protected from day one. Call (325) 936-1371 if you’ve got an older Linear operator and want us to check the mounts before they fail.
In most cases we can, and that’s the difference between repairing and replacing. If the bracket itself is intact but the weld is cracked, we cut the old weld, clean the steel, and re-weld it in place. If the bracket is wallowed or rusted through at the bolt hole, we fabricate a new one on site. We won’t weld a bracket that’s got less than 30% of its original material left, because you’ll be calling us back next spring. That’s the repair-then-repair-again mess Hal’s been cleaning up from other shops for years.
Most Linear welding and fabrication jobs in Highland Park are done in one trip, two to three hours door to door. A simple bracket re-weld is under an hour. A gate frame reinforcement with realignment takes longer because we support the leaf, cut, prep, weld, and let the steel cool before we put the gate back on the operator. We’ll tell you the expected time window when you call, and we show up in it.
We stock common clevis pins, hinge plate steel, and sheet stock for bracket fabrication on the truck, along with the welder and generator to do the job in your driveway. If you’ve got a rare Linear model that needs a specific replacement actuator arm or an OEM block, we source it from our local Highland Park supplier and schedule the install as soon as it lands. You’re never paying for a part we didn’t need or a backorder we didn’t tell you about.
