Which BFT Models This Applies To

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate binds or shudders halfway through travel. The mount plate has shifted and the rack is no longer running true, so the operator is fighting the gate instead of driving it.
• You saw a crack line at the base of a bracket or the post plate. That’s fatigue from a binding gate or a weld that never had proper penetration. Once you see the crack, stopping it is a race.
• The operator runs fine but the gate only opens two-thirds of the way before stalling. The rack has pulled away from the gate frame because the weld beads have stretched or broken.
• The gate sags visibly on the hinge side while the operator still cycles. The hinge post or its welded base has moved, and the gate is now handing that load to the BFT operator. The operator will lose that fight.
• You hear a sharp pop and the gate drops an inch before it catches. That’s a weld failing under load. Cut the power to the operator and call us before it comes the rest of the way down.

You can safely check three things before you pick up the phone: the metal tag on the operator for the model number, the condition of the weld around each bracket, and whether the gate has any visible sag at the hinge. Use a flashlight. That’s it; because once a weld has cracked, grinding and re-welding in place requires knowing the steel thickness, the right rod and heat for it, and how to keep from burning holes through a 20-year-old gate frame. Get the heat wrong on a thin section and you’ll turn a $200 bracket repair into a full gate frame replacement. A sagging gate can also be heavy enough to hurt you if it comes off the hinge while you’re under it.
